Death shouldn’t be an industry

Hello, dear reader.

I started this website out of my frustration with the death industry and the unbelievable cost of publishing obituaries in the local paper, both print and digital. As I vented to my partner about this, he made a big mistake. He said, “I bet someone could host a website for obituaries at a low price.”

I thought, What if that someone was me? What if I did that?

My dad died several years back and ever since, I’ve become increasingly appalled with how capitalism preys on grievers and how we, as a society, fail to deal with death in a healthy way. I’m not a doctor or a nurse. I’m not a funeral director. I am just a writer. My tools are limited and I know I’m not about to change the world. I do, however, want to start somewhere.

So, here I am, with a blog and a free domain in hopes that it has the potential to grow. I will proofread and publish the obituary you’ve written for your loved one for a PWYC donation. (If what you can pay is $0, please contact me anyway. We’ll figure something out.) If successful, I’ll use these donations to maintain a proper domain.

The obituary can be a few sentences or 2,000 words. This is for you, your friends and family. If this interests you, reach out using this contact form.

I’m mostly going to operate on the honour system, here, since the goal is accessibility. However, if one too many of you abuse the system by submitting an obit about your younger brother as a prank, I’ll have to take more security measures. Please be kind.
